Sedation Dentistry

Going to the dentist can be nerve-wracking, even for the simplest of procedures. Thankfully, there is a method our dentist, Art Carpenter, DDS, uses to safely relax his patients: oral conscious sedation. For easier treatment at our Kenilworth, IL, dental practice, talk to us about sedation dentistry.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

/

Sedation dentistry allows patients who suffer significant dental anxiety or discomfort in the dentist's chair to receive the treatments they require right away, preventing more serious problems in the future.

Don't Let Fear or Pain Prevent You From Dental Care

What kind of sedation dentistry do you use?

Simpler Methods, Strong Results Using Oral Conscious Sedation

Our Kenilworth, IL, dentistry practice oral offers oral conscious sedation for less intensive but enormously effective calming.

Oral conscious sedation involves a pill or several pills. This medication will keep you awake, but you will not feel the anxiety or pain you may typically associate with a dental visit.

Although there are a number of different sedation options out there, Dr. Carpenter prefers the use of oral conscious sedation — oral sedatives. It's a less intensive yet remarkably helpful alternative to nitrous oxide.

Our dentist can discuss your sedation options for various treatments and procedures performed at our Kenilworth, IL, practice. He can help you find the right level of sedation based on your individual anxieties and the treatments needed.

What You Need to Know
About Oral Sedatives:

Our Preferred Method

Dr. Carpenter prefers to prescribe oral sedatives for his patients.

This is commonly referred to as oral conscious sedation because while it will effectively lower your anxiety, you will still remain fully conscious and able to respond to directions.

The level of sedation you experience will depend on the dose he recommends. Oral sedatives can provide mild to moderate sedation.

With a mild sedative, you are fully awake but feel entirely relaxed.

You remain conscious with moderate sedatives but may slur your words and even have trouble remembering your procedure.

The 3 Benefits of Oral Conscious Sedation

Circled number 1

1. Decreased Anxiety

Different forms of sedation dentistry use some form of medication to help patients feel calm and relaxed before and during dental procedures. Alleviated anxiety can improve treatment experience and lessen discomfort.

Circled number 2

2. Higher Tolerance

With the proper dosage, patients can feel comfortable and completely at ease while still remaining conscious. Patients can also remain stationary for longer periods of time, enabling them to undergo more extensive procedures in fewer visits.

Circled number 3

3. Simpler Sedation

You do not need heavy sedation options like nitrous oxide to stay comfortable at the dentist. Oral conscious sedation can help you remain comfortable during your procedure without the monitoring or possible side effects of deeper sedation.

Consultation

You must have a prescription for oral sedatives, so you will need to meet with Dr. Carpenter at our Kenilworth, IL, office to discuss your needs. He will assess them carefully during this consultation.

Discussion

You should also tell him about any medications you take. This can prevent unwanted reactions. If you're worried you can't remember the name, write it down on paper or make a note in your phone.

Prescription

Based on your personal anxiety levels and the procedure you will undergo, he can prescribe an appropriate medication and specified dose. Feel free to ask questions on anything during the process.

Will I Need Someone to Drive Me?

Yes, you will need to have someone drive you to our dental office and back home again. Oral conscious sedation will keep you calm and even unaware during your appointment.

Because it will likely be effective before and during your dental visit, you will need to take precautions. Your safety is important to us — and we're happy to explain how to best take care of yourself during this process.

In most cases, Dr. Carpenter will advise taking a dose of sedative at home and then another once you reach our office. He may advise patients with more serious phobias to take a sedative the night before to help calm their nerves.

The most exciting part about oral conscious sedation? The fact that it makes dentistry procedures possible again for anxious patients.
