Implant-Supported Dentures

If you are missing most or all of your natural teeth, dentures are a great option to restore oral function and appearance.  Dentures paired with dental implants can provide even more benefits, such as stability and jawbone stimulation that prevents deterioration. Dr. Art Carpenter in Kenilworth, IL, can help you replace your missing teeth and restore oral function with dentures supported by implants.

What Are
Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically inserted into your jaw. Implants provide unparalleled support for dental restorations. Dentures and other restorations are secured directly to the implants, replacing your missing teeth with maximum stability.

Additionally, dental implants act as prosthodontic tooth roots. Bone atrophy can occur after tooth loss, but implants provide the jawbone with much-needed stimulation that helps prevent this bone deterioration.

Candidates for Implant Dentures

Sufficient Jaw Tissue

Patients must have sufficient jawbone tissue to qualify for implants. If you have significant bone atrophy, Dr. Carpenter may recommend a bone graft or sinus lift to restore your jawbone.

Missing Teeth

Dental implants can be paired with multiple restorations, such as crowns and bridges. If you are missing just a few teeth or a single tooth, an implant-supported bridge or crown may be a better option for you.

Dental Implant and Denture Process

"Our philosophy is to educate and motivate our patients to maintain their teeth and oral health for a lifetime."

Initial Consultation

Dr. Carpenter will examine your mouth and discuss your oral health history and goals to determine if you are a candidate for implants. At this appointment, your dentist will take the time to help you understand the risks and benefits of denture implants so that you can make the best decision for yourself.

Dental Implant Placement

Implant placement is a minor surgical procedure. Your dentist will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. We can also provide dental sedation to help anxious patients achieve optimal relaxation. Four or more dental implants made of high-quality titanium will be surgically inserted directly into the jaw, then a temporary denture is typically attached immediately.

Healing

Over the course of about four to six months, your mouth will heal, allowing the dental implants to fuse to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration.

Permanent Restoration

Once you have healed, you will return to our Kenilworth dentistry practice to have your permanent set of dentures placed. Dr. Carpenter will secure your custom dentures directly to the dental implants. They will look, feel, and function like normal teeth. It is normal to have a few adjustment appointments to ensure proper fit and function.

Does Implant Placement Hurt?

Your mouth will be numbed prior to dental implant surgery, meaning you will not feel pain while your implants are placed. However, minor discomfort following surgery is to be expected and is typically easily managed using comfort measures such as:

  • Over-the-counter pain meds
  • Prescription pain meds
  • Ice
  • Eating soft foods for a few days

If you experience pain that cannot be managed, please contact our Kenilworth, IL, practice immediately so your dentist can address your issues promptly.

Sedation Available

If you suffer from dental anxiety or simply want extra comfort care, our Kenilworth dental practice offers oral conscious sedation. You will be given medication prior to your procedure, which will produce a sedative effect. You will remain awake, but you will feel relaxed and calm. It is important to remember that you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment, as you cannot drive until the sedation wears off several hours later.

No Need to Remove

/

Unlike traditional dentures, your implant-supported dentures do not need to be removed. There is no need to detach or soak your new restoration. Treat them just as you would normal teeth, and brush and floss as you normally would. Dr. Carpenter will provide you with the education you need to maintain your smile for years to come.

Financing Available

While we accept many insurance plans at our Kenilworth, IL, dental practice, insurance does not typically cover the cost of dental implants. However, many insurances will cover the restoration, such as your dentures. We do not want financial barriers to prevent patients from enjoying the multitude of benefits dental implants provide, so we proudly accept CareCredit® financing to help patients cover their out-of-pocket costs.

"We have been coming to Dr. Carpenter for several years now after seeing dentists that lacked good patient relationships. Dr. Carpenter is patient with those who fear going to the dentist (that's me), explains what needs to be done and provides different options for treatment. Worth the trek from the city!"
